DeForest Legion Post holds Eighth Grade Constitution Speech Event

DeForest, WI- May 17, 2022 — A DeForest Area Middle School student was the only contestant of the annual Eighth Grade Constitution Speech event. Vaira McMahan spoke on the Third Amendment to the U. S. Constitution which holds that 'no soldier in time of peace [shall] be quartered in any house without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.' McMahan, daughter of Gale and Audra McMahan of DeForest, was presented a certificate of achievement, a copy of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, a coin minted for the post's centennial observance and a $100 scholarship. The program receives the strong support of Greg Vandehey, Eighth Grade teacher at DeForest Area Middle School. The post is now preparing for The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program which has since 1938, encouraged the nation’s high school students to study the U.S. Constitution and to hone their public speaking skills.
